The International Society of Glass Beadmakers held its annual meeting, The Gathering, virtually June 10–13, 2021. Keynote speaker Janis Miltenberger inspired participants to focus on the processes used to create their glass artwork. Also included was a virtual Flame Off featuring four artists working in different countries and a tour of Italian art with renowned glass artist Mauro Vianello.

The Skinny on Precise Kiln Formed Glass Designs

Design pieces on the top surface of kiln formed projects commonly distort when they’ve been heated to a full fuse. The solution is to fire projects upside down. As the glass starts to melt, the weight of the base sheet glass pushing down on the design pieces prevents gaps from opening due to surface tension.

The past decade has seen a flourish of diversity in the work coming from Jason Lee’s kiln. He has built his name largely on immense pieces exploding with intricate linework as he has pushed the limits of this technique. The Contemporary Glass Society is delighted to announce both the winners of the Glass Sellers/Contemporary Society 2021 Glass Prize and the glass graduates to be included in the New Graduate Review 2021 publication. Because CGS was unable to award prizes last year because of the pandemic, this year’s review will include graduates from 2020 and 2021.
