Paul Messink takes you through his journey dealing with bubbles in his artwork. His early thick pieces included visible bubbles. Paul set out on a mission to remove this distraction from his work. Initially trying several common approaches, he now uses collected conventional wisdom in a specific and unique way that virtually eliminates distracting bubbles and the related problems with “surface craters”.

In his lecture, Messink will explain how bubbles are trapped between layers of glass, and will discuss all of the tactics he employs to “exterminate” them from his layered, thick blocks. These same techniques can be used to eliminate distracting bubbles from your work as well. Paul's lecture includes a video which shows how these techniques are used, and also includes recommended changes to your firing schedules to reduce bubbles.

Paul Messink, in addition to his recent move to the southern California desert, is an artist and instructor working in kiln-formed glass. Messink draws on prior drawing and painting experience to create hand-painted, multi-layered glass panels that present nature in deep dimension. While mostly self taught, he has been fortunate to learn from artists such as Susan Taylor Glasgow, Richard LaLonde, Mark Salsbury, Annette Baron, and Don Schneider.

Messink received the “People's Choice Award” in 2015 at the 3rd Clay and Glass Biennial Exhibition (Brea, CA). He was awarded “Best in Show” in the 2014 IGAA Group Exhibit “GATHERING: Contemporary Glass from the Heartland” (Indianapolis, IN), and was a Category Winner in The 2014 Glass Prize, from Warm Glass UK (Bristol, England). He has also received “Best in Glass” in the 2012 and 2014 Royal Oak Clay, Glass and Metal show (Royal Oak, MI), and “Multi-Media Artist of the Year” in the Art Comes Alive 2013 exhibition (Cincinnati, OH).
