WE-15 Broken to Beautful:  Silver Clay and Stoneware

Katie Baum

ALL SKILL LEVELS

9:00am - 3:00pm

Within this workshop, we take shattered bits and pieces of stoneware, ceramic, porcelain, or china, and give them a new life as amazing pieces of wear- able art. We explore two different ways of incorporating fireable pottery items into metal clay pieces, and each artist will create one pendant and one pair of earrings (if preferred, a pendant may be made instead of the pair of earrings).  We start from scratch, with shards of stoneware and moist metal clay. With some
texturing, shaping, molding, sculpting, and patience, we make fine silver captures and embellishments for our broken bits. We then refine our artwork according to taste, and fire the silver and ceramic together to transform the pieces into elegant accessories.  Because of the extended firing time of ceramic and stoneware, pieces will need to be picked up the following day, but don’t worry – we’ll cover finishing techniques in class and students will have their choice of
whether or not to have their pieces tumbled.  Students bring: Broken bits of porcelain, stoneware, ceramic, or china (not all styles are useable, but the instructor will have a selection to choose from also), favorite metal clay tools, magnification visor or tool and task lamp if necessary. Teacher has tools available for loan if students are new to metal clay or prefer not to pack them.

Class Limit: 10............................. $185.00
*Additional Materials fee: $90 (retail value of kit is $140!) and includes 20g Art Clay Silver, a complete jar of Art Clay Overlay Paste, fine silver screw eyes, sterling silver ear wires. Syringe and regular silver paste types will be available for student use during class also. Additional clay will be available during class should anyone wish to add additional embellishments to pieces.
