WE-23 Glass Combing and Manipulation

Intermediate - Basic Glass Cutting
skills and fusing knowledge required-not for a new beginner.

 

Students will learn how to work at high
temperatures in a hot kiln to manipulate
and comb glass into beautiful free flowing
designs and patterns. Each student will
create a 6” x 6” tile which they will fuse
and comb using their choice of tools and
techniques. Firing schedules, safety and
kiln design will be discussed in relation to
hot glass manipulation. Various methods of
strip cutting and tools appropriate for hot
glass will be demonstrated. High-fired designs,
pot melts, screen and wire melts will
also be discussed. A vitrograph will be set
up to demonstrate pulled elements. Once
the basic techniques have been learned,
creative uses for combed and manipulated
pieces will be discussed; including but not
limited to: jewelry design and using these
elements to embellish your glass pieces. If
time permits, a second piece will be created
using combed and manipulated glass elements.
Students bring: Basic glass cutting
and hand tools. Students should also wear
cotton clothing, closed-toed shoes and
protective eyewear.
