The Calusa Indians lived in Southwest Florida for hundreds of years. They expressed their artistic themes in the materials available to them including wood, shell, bone, plant fiber, leather, feathers, and later metal. They were excellent carvers. Mary Ann has studied their history and their work including the Calusa masks exhibited in the University of Florida museum. She uses PMC to closely interpret the complex wooden carvings in three dimensional jewelry of fine silver.
Project: A PMC fine silver mask inspired by examples of Calusa designs.
Techniques:
- Build a face and use a dome to provide dimension.
- Carve dry clay (greenware) or use texture sheets to emulate the work of the Calusa.
- Embed fine silver wire in the mask to add details like hair.
Materials: PMC3 clay and paste are required. PMC3 syringe, PMC sheet and fine silver wire are optional. Materials may be purchased at the time of the class.
The fee for a one day class at Bead Boutique is $95.
Basic supplies for the class are available for purchase from the instructors at the time of the class.
