This class combines the long histories of glass and photography with the high tech of laser printers and digital photos. Students will learn an exciting new way to etch favorite photographs onto dichroic glass using etching cream, Mad Craft Skills Printable Resist - and photos downloaded from smart phones! Imagine being able to transform a fleeting digital photo into something that could potentially last forever - I'm talking about glass! We'll etch dichroic as well as non-dichroic glass using a variety of etching techniques then practice cutting the shapes out using ringsaws and grinders. We'll finish up the first session by prepping the pieces for kiln firing overnight. Students will return the next day to assemble the newly fired dichroic treasures into a finished 6” x 12” panel ready to display at home in a window or on a tabletop. Carmen will also demonstrate how Photoshop and Illustrator are used to prep the artwork for etching so that students will walk away understanding the basics of the process.
Students bring: a selection of digital photos of people - either on your smart phone along with the cable to connect it to a computer or on CD/ DVD/USB/Flash drive (photos should be at least 300 dpi if on any format other than on the smart phone - selfies work great and the more varied the angle of the faces the better!)
