Charles Ziegler Lawrence has worked during the past fifty-six years in many of the major East Coast studios United States and served for almost twenty years as the premiere designer for Willet Studios. He is also responsible for creating five of the stunning windows that are part of the glass art at the Washington National Cathedral.

The 2012 American Glass Guild (AGG) conference, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, presented a world-class program of preconference workshops, a series of talks covering the history of the development of art glass, and an abundance of opportunities to enjoy glass art. the Juried Members Exhibit also provided a rare and unique chance to view AGG members’ work all in one location.

Inventory items line the perimeter, but the eye goes to custom-built workbenches, where someone is always working. The Ericksons believe that this focal point fosters a subliminal notion that the visitor, too, can be a maker.

A chance encounter at SOFA Chicago 2010 culminated in the inclusion of thirty-six members of the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) in Mosaic Art Today, a new book by Jeffrey B. Snyder. Knowing that the SAMA membership is comprised of many of the best mosaic artists working in the medium today, a call went out to artists who were encouraged by SAMA to submit work for this project.

Providing a Haven for Families of Hospitalized Children

Ed Hoy’s International recently had the opportunity to combine industry talents to help support the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world built in Chicago, Illinois. With the assistance of Spectrum, Bullseye, and Uroboros glass companies, glass art panels were created for the lobby of the new building to encompass the theme of the entire building. The purpose was to bring a little peace and hope to the families who stay there while their children are being treated for serious illnesses.

Beth Lipman’s Still Lifes in Glass

Beth Lipman makes work at her rural home studio in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, in a building that used to house the largest producer of chicks in the county and now serves as an incubator for ideas and art. She creates still lifes that are three-dimensional drawings that begin with a general idea and amasses components for work that evolves over time through the addition and subtraction of objects.

ISGB Begins a New Venture

The International Society of Glass Beadmakers (ISGB) regional directors decided to create an opportunity for its members to take a step into the jury process and venture into new territory. The new Venture exhibit allows each region to name its own theme and identify three judges to set criteria for feedback to the participants. A virtual show was also created online, which allows for more artists to participate.

Magic Medals Race In for the Olympics

Medals were the focal point of an Olympic-inspired exhibition that tested the creativity and technical skill of artists working with glass. The Medallions exhibition, officially part of the Cultural Olympiad and the Festival of Glass, attracted more than 80 artists who created their own unique imaginings of the Olympic medal. The result was a stunning wall of glass medals that showcased the fascinating range of techniques and the inventiveness of the artists.
