Killing
the Kiln Myths: Heat Rises
This is the first installment of a regular column by
John S. Hohenshelt, President of Paragon Industries,
L.P. The title for the column will be "Killin' the
Kiln Myths." The column has two purposes.
First, it will explain why some information readily
passed on in the art glass world about
kiln operation is a myth. Second, it will explain
the technical reasons behind why some ideas or methods
that seem strange have accurate technical underpinnings.

Lino
Tagliapietra: The Maestro of Murano
At 12 years old, when Lino Tagliapietra informed his
mother, a talented lace maker, and his father, a
fisherman, that he would be dropping out of school to
work in a glass factory, they were less than thrilled.
But at age 21,
when he became a Glass Maestro, it seemed like a pretty
good plan after all.
Now age 73,
Tagliapietra's artistic mastery and vision continue to
influence Studio Glass artists around the world.
Redesigning Your Web Site to Keep a Competitive
Advantage
Ann Sanborn reports that an average of 60 percent of
online merchants have redesigned their e-commerce sites
in the past year to keep their Web sites attractive and
to make it easier for customers to find merchandise and
make
purchases. Better product and page organization and
smoother navigation took top priority, followed by
adding rich media (enhanced picture and product detail
features) to their Web sites.
Kobe Lampwork Festa
Bandhu Dunham reports on the International Lampwork
Festa held in Kobe, Japan, October of 2008, "a rewarding
experience, full of creative stimulation." The Festa was
sponsored by the Kobe Lampwork Glass Museum and
the Japan Lampwork Society.
Casting: Part VI
Making a Silicone Rubber Mold with a Mother Mold
The next two articles in Milon Townsend's series on kiln
casting glass will focus on the creation of a
large-scale work made using 30 pounds of glass.
The first article will illustrate the
making of a mother mold, and the second will demonstrate
how to make the glass casting itself.
A Little of This and That
What do a veterinarian's assistant, a welcome sign, a
T-shirt, a piece of molding and a comic book have in
common? All provided inspiration for sandblasted
projects pictured and discussed in Butch Young's next
installment. |
